Dear Sir / Madam
I’m a U.K. painter and having in the past owned a gallery I still deal in art. I recently bought a gorgeous little oil painting at auction, It measures 25 x 31cm, is painted on what appears to be an oil board which has a frame backing of hardboard (I haven’t yet removed it from the frame ) and apart from a few minor scratches, minor bowing of the board and a coat of discoloured varnish is in good condition.
Signed ‘SanWin 1930′ the frame is probably from a later date, 1960′s?
I e-mailed Gill at the River Gallery in Myanmar who kindly forwarded my e-mail to Ma Thanegi, she has been most helpful, sent me details about the artist and has confirmed that in her opinion this is most likely a work by U San Win.
My painting is dated 1930 when according to my reading U San Win was working with the Burma Art Club, under Professor Ward and with the recently European trained U Ba Nyan, hence unlike his later work.
Ma Thanegi who kindly sent me her opinion wrote;
“The scene looks a bit European but the figures seemed dressed in white shirts/blouses with dark sarongs. Anyway its a lovely painting very quickly done, so fresh, unlike his portraits or figures of dancers, which were good, too, no doubt, but this one looks it was painted on the spot”
I would much value your opinon on the painting and if you would be happy to look at it do you have an e-mail address that I could forward the images to.
